Here in Ontario, unless you have been living under a rock, you know that there is a new Gr1-8 math curriculum. And seeing that it is supposed to be implemented this year, there are many who are wondering "how do I do this?". Well the workshops are starting and, depending on when you see this, you may still have time to sign up for the first of many workshops to help get ready.

I have long said that playing games is the gateway to loving math and in this post @MarkChubb3 may give you some ideas on how to incorporate these into your classes.

It looks like Chris Suurtamm, Jo Boaler and others has done some research to help us in these strange times. I totally appreciate the precursor: "We're in this Together".

As resources start to be released for the new Ontario curriculum, you may want to stay on top of them.
First up, you might want to get a sense on how the curriculum has changed compared to the previous version.

Though this isn't directly about math, it does use math education as a back drop to talk about equity in education. Thanks to @DDMeyer for pointing this out.

This week (on Thursday) I am presenting at the ECOO Camp virtual conference. Just a quick tutorial and introduction to using Desmos Activity Builder. But if you are interested, take a look at the other tech based sessions. I am part of the STEM section but there are other sections that are more general uses of tech like Wellness, Equity, Digital Pedagogy and more.

There is a lot of uncertainty about C19 deaths. There are stories of people dying of all manor of illnesses and being counted as a C19 death. Those who are C19 deniers try to use this as evidence that this is all a hoax. But the reality is that counting deaths related to C19 is complex. However, a better way to get a gauge on the number of C19 deaths is to look at the excess deaths. As it turns out, the yearly/monthly death rates in each country are fairly steady. So the excess deaths in any time period can be attributed to some anomaly. In this case it's C19. And in actuality, the thought is that the official C19 death count is probably an undercount. Anyway, here is some data on the excess deaths by race.

Recently Desmos has made it so that you could share teacher dashboards so that if you wanted to team teach an activity, you could do it. Now they have finally set things up so that you can actually collaborate on the actual construction of the activity. Though you can't edit the activity at the same time, you can both be working on it.

If you like to do bigger problems with your kids, then check out the weekly problems put out from Iowa State University. They might be better for more of the upper grades but you can still find some that might be good for your stronger kids in lower grades.

A new resource (to me) is the website #SlowRevealGraphs. In each case, a graph is given but not all at once. The details are released a bit at a time to elicit discussion with your students. And I think anything that helps students talk about math is a good thing. You can read about how to use them here (and see all the different contributors). Consider creating your own contribution as well if you have a good graph in mind.

I like this resource about the math involved in card shuffling. And though some of the math may be a bit advanced, the general idea may be good for discussion when talking about randomness. Includes a nice interactive as well.
