Do you have a grade 10 or 11 student here in Canada who is interested in STEAM? Then they may want to apply to take part in the SHAD program. The Program runs in July but the deadline is this December. Students participate in this University based program that "provides a unique opportunity for students to access university academics, STEAM and entrepreneurship content and hands-on learning experiences that go way beyond the high school curriculum."

You can take a look at this week's @Desmos Live video below where they released a new activity The Tortoise and the Hare (good for all of your describing linear motion needs). But what I wanted to point out is their list of all of their newly released activities all together in this collection. Some of these were even news to me. Check them out here:

Here's a fun websketch from @DPScher based on a @JamesTanton problem. It's a puzzle based on balances where there is a connection to solving equations but with a bit more complexity.

I like when simple conversations yield more resources. In this case, @DonFraser6 posts a prompt and then @MarkChubb3 jumps on board.

I think any time that you can contextualize math in a way that connects to students then you are probably on the right track. And so if you are working with cylinders, then you might like this task from @MrAspinal connecting cylinders to Super Mario. Have fun

I was reminded of this video this week. It's a great connection between coding and mathematics and with the new Ontario math curriculum's inclusion of coding, it seems like it's a good fit. Though some of the math moves into high school, it could easily be used in elementary to spark interest.

It's Global Math Week. For the last few years, lead by @JamesTanton and @GlobalMathProj, teachers around the world have been on a mission to spread joyous mathematics to their students. This year is no different and starting Oct 10 (10/10) we hope that you will bring the idea of Exploding Dots to your kids. Check out the website for all the activities.

Just a reminder that, maybe, understanding data management is more important than calculus. And although there have been some concerns with the group Levitt got together for this for not having enough actual teachers, I still pretty much agree with the sentiment. Thanks to @Joe_Sisco for pointing this one out

It's now time for me to shamelessly plug the podcast that I do. This is the third year that I have taken speakers from the OAME conference and interviewed them about their sessions and it is still not at all like work. This season we have @PeterTaylor&@Pi_Lab, Ian VanderBurgh, @TaraCFlynn&@ShelleyYearley, @RooSloan and starting off this month we have Ron Lancaster talking about his session "A Shared Problem Solving Activity". On the podcast episode he doesn't divulge the activity he's going to do but did a similar type of activity that has a low floor and high ceiling with a surprising result. You can register for his webinar at our @OAMEtalks website
