Math Links for Week Ending Aug 25th, 2023

Myself (along with @RobinMath3) presented at the @CEMC summer conference this week and at some of the other sessions there were a couple of nice resources. And because it was the CEMC conference you know that there would be problem solving. So of course people shared some resource. In this case, we were sad to hear of the passing of Don Steward due to COVID but that his family maintained his site which has a lot of resources. Check this huge resource out

Also there was this nice source of Indigenous math that, I'm sure, will be expanded on in the future. Be sure to check out the looming stuff that includes coding:

Not only is this an amazing set of equations (just over 380 lines) but it's also amazing that it was student created. It just goes to show you that when students are interested, they can do just about anything.

It seems like @KarenCampe has been working overtime with her blog posts. I like this one on using the rectangular area model for multiplication of numbers, fractions, polynomials and more. But the thing that interested me the most was using the area model for division, specifically polynomial division. Very cool.

I think it could be a neat idea to get students to do this for a number that is important to them.

I have always loved how the Pythagorean relationship works with any regular shape. I've done my own work in this area before but not as good as this.

I would say that this goes further as Physics is inside Chemistry, and Chemistry is inside Biology.

As a former president of the OAME, I always like to see/hear what other associations are doing. And as the host of the @OAMEtalks podcast, I am doubly interested when those associations have their own podcasts. So I have added this one from down under and the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers to my page of math based podcasts. Just a few episodes in but it's always good to hear from other mathematics associations.

The thing I really like about this problem is that, sure, you can hammer it through with some algebraic manipulation but you can also do it with some simple guess and check with some knowledge of perfect squares.

I was introduced to the game Set years ago at Twitter Math Camp and loved it right from the start. So it's cool to see how the math is deeper than just playing the game. I love the vector space representation. Although they don't talk about it here, another variation is 3D Set. That you play more collaboratively but it's fun too.
