A spinoff of the NPR show Science Friday is the podcast #ScienceDiction where in each episode they take on a science word and talk about its history. On this episode they talk about the word Algebra. And the thing I love the most about this is that it is that the main part of the story is about a high schooler, Gracie Cunningham, who posted a TikTok asking where algebra came from and it went viral and it seemed like she was made fun of by everyone but math professors. Including great stuff from @StevenStrogatz and @DrEugeniaCheng

I having spent about 10 years out of the classroom in a support role, I get what @ddmeyer is saying. Though I’m not a classroom teacher ( I’m a VP) now, being back in a building and sometimes teaching multiple classes a day I have a lot of the same feelings.

This from @CliffHunter36 is an old post but new to me. But useful if you are remediating multiplication or even looking for a math starter for higher grades to help hone their multiplication skills. And as the post says, "This is not Splat!" Splat is about solving equations, this is about multiplication. You might also like my post on array multiplication cards or @GFletchy's subitizing multiplication cards

One of my favourite mathematical properties is the identity property. This is because it seems so simple (and maybe useless) but the idea of multiplying by 1 and getting the same answer is super powerful in so many branches of mathematics and that is because 1 can come in many forms.

"This activity was exhilarating for me as well as the students" - that was @AlexOverwijk talking about a, (relatively) straightforward activity where students start with some fractions and have to extend the pattern and then connect the fractions to Pythagorean theorem. The end result is some "unexpected beauty"

This might be new for grade 9 teachers but @MSBJacobs reminds us that it doesn't take much planning to do a good number talk, just some thought out questions. Here he does a progression of percent questions that help students hone their mental math skills. I have a draft Desmos activity that kinda does the same thing here
