When this was part of our curriculum it was one of my favourite things to teach. Tim gives a couple of great proofs but one thing I always tried to get out was the connection of the infinite repeating decimal and the unit value. It always led to some great discussions in any course about the meaning of infinity.

I like this because you could use brute force and count all the hexagons or you could just find the shape that tiles the plane and count the squares on that one.
