I came across this Tweet from @ddmeyer and kind of dismissed it but later on I saw a reply in the thread that said this:"You're gonna say something this year – it might feel innocuous and forgettable – that one of your students will be recounting with his voice cracking TWENTY YEARS LATER." That got me curious and looked at the thread. It was in response to something a principal (who was part of the audience) said: "One principal told me afterwards about the time in 7th grade that he felt belittled by his math teacher and gave up on math.". No doubt, that we have all done this at one time or another. Makes you really think about the power and influence we have and how we can affect the most vulnerable students so easily. Well, I guess it's that time. And by that, I mean time for another one of those "viral" math problems. This time it's another one of those "BEDMAS/PEMDAS" debates dealing with implied multiplication: 8/2(2+2). Now, full disclosure, I would have been one arguing for the answer 16 but now I am firmly in the 1 camp. Of course, by standard order of operation rules, the answer would be 16 but like most things in school, we don't give the whole picture and it turns out that there is a rule about implied multiplication that gives it precedence. You can read a thread I posted about this issue a couple of years ago here where, among other things, you can see an explicit mention of this rule in a calculator manual. That being said, I do like @StevenStrogatz's take on it which is more to talk about the importance of notation than to give the correct answer. Thanks to @JPJacula for pointing this one out.
