School has been starting in many districts now for weeks. But with Labour Day passing, I think we've all started now. One thing I will be focussing on in my new school of grade 7&8s is basic skills. Beyond the regular curriculum that needs to be taught I want teachers to continually provide activities so students can practice their numeracy skills. These Math Flips from @BerkleyEveret are a great way to rethink the idea of a flash card.

I am curious how you would use this to "cause a headache" for students to give them a reason to learn trig. Thanks to @Joe_Sisco for pointing this one out.

Ss will try making these to estimate right angle trig unknowns. Avoiding SOH CAH TOA and creating a headache that will be cured by trig functions. pic.twitter.com/TDb6qqauU2— Phil Smith (@psmithdad) September 5, 2019

In this post, @MarkChubb3 takes a look at how important multiple solutions are but only if we understand the strength of each solution (and the pitfalls of only showing students the "best" solution.
"While multiple strategies are helpful to know, it is important for US to know which strategies are early understandings, and which are more sophisticated. WE need to know which students to push and when to allow everyone to do it THEIR way, then hold a math congress together to discuss relationships between strategies, and which strategies might be more beneficial in which circumstance."Curriculum Tags: All

I remember as a kid, the teacher telling us the "trick" about greater than or less than by considering the alligator's mouth without worrying about understanding. This video from @BerkleyEveret does a great job of visualizing their meanings without a trick.

I don't seem to get tired of these dynamic bar graphs of "popularity" of what ever happens to be the flavour of the day. In this case, browser popularity.New visual, inspired by the May 2019 @TCM_at_NCTM article by @LiversStefanie, Kristin Harbour, and Lindsey Fowler, which includes suggestions on conceptual ways to teach the comparison symbols (instead of crocodile mouths).— Berkeley Everett (@BerkeleyEverett) August 31, 2019

I know this is an animation but I still really like it. A lot of math going on. Especially trig

I love these animations where what seems to be complex motion can have a hidden simpler motion embedded. In this case some sinusoidal motion along a straight line. This is so cool 🙂 pic.twitter.com/aC3zLh5IB8— Physics & Astronomy Zone (@ZonePhysics) September 1, 2019

I don't think you will have students looking for some of these but it's a great crossover between computing and mathematics dealing with powers and integers.

Another reason that you shouldn't resort to "Tricks" - they expire. Thanks to @HThiesmejer for pointing this one out.
