Math Links for Week Ending Apr. 29th, 2022

I have heard @Trianglemancsd talk about this pattern machine that he's made and used at Math on a Stick at the Minnesota state fair (something I've wanted to go to since I've heard about it). It seems so tactile and fun and full of mathematical possibilities. Now you can have the patterns (though not the tactile experience). And creators @nhoskee and Beth Johnson have made it easy to share any pattern you make by having a copy button that allows you to paste easily into Twitter and other socials.

I have definitely featured this site before but I think Would You Rather is a great math starter and @JStevens009 continues to add to the list of prompts. So if you haven't seen it before, now is the best time to start.

I think that if you can give students a real world problem that they are also interested. And I think that many students think they are going to be YouTube stars or influencers but really have no idea what it takes.

I think it's important to realize that what @Howie_Hua isn't talking about are "tricks" to doing math problems but understanding that although the standard algorithm may always get you the answer it's not always the way that demonstrates an understanding of the math.

One of two new podcasts that I've added to my list of math related podcasts is The Podcast of Unnecessary Detail which is mostly about science but has some that feature math. Especially since one of the hosts is @StandupMaths. I love this podcast. It's very smart and funny. Check out the latest episode that features primes.

I have featured the @MathisVisual site before but I am such a big fan of visual representations that I think it's worth another reminder. Here are two recent posts. One on visualizing the volume of a cylinder and one on equivalent ratios. They do a really good job of conceptualizing each of the topics they choose while giving you, the teacher, as many prompts as possible about how to present the topic.

The problem of related rates is not a new one for calculus and the standard examples of cars driving away from each other at right angles or shadows growing over time are common in calculus classes. That being said, I like the approach that @TheEricLee has taken here by actually giving hands on stations and experiments for students to do that match these classic problems. The shadow one is my favourite
