It was OAME 2019 this week so I will focus on things I saw there. Before we get to the stuff I saw, I encourage you to look at the back channel and all the people Tweeting about the conference. So many good things. Click on the link to see them all but below are a couple specific ones and especially look at the one by @DerekRhodenizer where he has created a shared Google Doc where anyone can add info into (got some to add, then go ahead):

Looking at @obj’s “insane” catch that stunned us all.— ~Hedge~ (@approx_normal) May 17, 2019
But is it REALLY insane? No.
Look at how he PRACTICES.

Tell me I wasn’t the only one in tears at the end of @samjshah & @stoodle #teachervoice session at #oame2019 Thank you for your heartfelt, raw and real stories, anecdotes and advice. You inspire pic.twitter.com/fWqpH3ULxm— Jaime De Pippo (@MrsDePippo) May 17, 2019

I know a placehttps://t.co/dI9yYLMpWX
I'll start with the four sessions that I presented. I did a session on using Twitter (and other social media) to build your personal PLN (here are all the links people shared in that one), one on using CODAP in data management and two in the Desmos mini conference: one on activities for Grade 7&8 and one on using Desmos Geometry. You can get to all of my slide decks at the link below

The first session that I actually saw was from @NatBanting on "Creating Mathematical Possibility by Constraining Mathematical Possibility". Get the slide deck here

I saw @HTheijsmeijer's session on using technology to move beyond traditional assessment. One thing liked was the idea of replacing the word "effectiveness" with more specific words in the standard rubrics. There is other good stuff too, Check out her slideshow.

I also saw @MSBJacobs and Natalie Reid talking about minding the gaps in student thinking with some great diagnostic tasks that you could really use for any grade. I especially love both the simplicity and effectiveness of the place value ones.

I saw one of @TracyZager's session on Going Beyond Group Work and you can see some images below but one other thing I learned is that there are a pile of resources on her book "Becoming the Math Teacher you wish You'd had" on her website

Some ways to create high yield interactions in math class from @TracyZager at #OAME2019 pic.twitter.com/zzRNwqntaI— David Petro (@davidpetro314) May 17, 2019
The idea of “rough draft” talk in math class is intriguing to me as it makes the connection to writing essays ( for example) via @TracyZager at #Oame2019 pic.twitter.com/vejpYAEfSJ— David Petro (@davidpetro314) May 17, 2019
Do you know someone who isn't on Twitter but might like to Tweet? Well, they can use an account that @CarlOliwitter created. Just send an email to pushsend2020@gmail.com that has no more than 270 characters and that account will Tweet it out for you anonymously. Pro tip, remove any automatic signature on your email or that will show up in the Tweet. That was part of what he did, you can find more in his slidedeck below

I did a Breakout Room for mathwith @BoychukMath and @Coachie83 . It was fun and they had a lot of resources on how to create your own in their slide deck

One of the examples that @TracyZager used in her session was from a resource on Learn, Teach, Lead featuring @MatthewOldridge where he started with this prompt and then they captured (via video) all of the student thinking around the question "What's a fair price for each cup size?" And although the mathematics fits grade 7 or 8, the discussion could fit any grade. Below is just one of the videos. Click through the link below to see the whole series. Tracy used excerpts from the student clips (third link)

I'm going to shut down the pushsend2020 so that the spammers don't get a hold of it, but I'd be happy to show how easy and free it could be to set this up for teachers in your plan.
ReplyDeleteit's too bad that we even have to worry about spammers
