I like this post from @MrJohnRowe about focussing on when students "stall" when problem solving or when they don't even start. "We need to do a better job at helping students with “Problem Starting” and be less obsessed with “Problem Solving”. When I looked at this I thought I would just start with a brute force method but after one calculation it was clear I should look at something more logical. And yes, it was a non intuitive result but it made sense.
