A long time ago I taught my daughter, who was in grade 3, how to differentiate simple polynomial functions just to show that just knowing an algorithm doesn't mean you understand the math. So this totally resonates with me.

The second thing from Desmos is that they are currently accepting applications for the 4th cohort of their Desmos Fellows. I was a member of last year's 3rd cohort and it's been a pretty cool year seeing behind the curtain as to how things run. But really the best part is all the new colleagues I gained both from face to face meetings a Desmos HQ but online in their company Slack channel. And it was cool to have a tiny part in testing out some of the new stats features before they went live. So check out their post and consider applying.

Here's a fun little Desmos Challenge Creator by @rilesblue dealing with equivalent ratios. It's pretty simple as it is just the challenge creator but here students choose their rivalry (eg Apple vs Android), create a fictitious comparison and then create some equivalent ratios. This becomes the challenge that the rest of the students in the class have to do. These Challenge Creators are an excellent way to get kids engaged in otherwise boring practice since they are creating the actual questions.

There has been a lot of talk in Ontario lately about going back to basics. And although I don't think we have lost the basics (and what the basics actually are is a discussion on its own), I do think there is no harm in practicing basic skills beyond the grades that they are taught. In this case, I took a cue from @gfletchy who has a set of subitizing multiplication cards and built a few different versions of these array multiplication cards. This way we can continue to practice mental multiplication without resorting to memorization techniques. With these cards students can practice multiplication up to 12x12.

It's no surprise that I am big fan of @pgliljedahl's ideas about the Thinking Classroom. Some of the things that still perplex me are things like assessment and how to properly manage flow. Another thing is the skill of helping students take notes. In this post @PaiMath does a great job outlining what note taking looks like in the Thinking Classroom. This is part one so I assume part two will be on the way.

I think that sometimes probability gets glossed over when, in fact, I think we need to look deeper at probability as it is one of those mathematical concepts that we want our our students to have a good grasp of. I have always been a fan of the area formula for a trapezoid. Why? because it's often dismissed but it can actually be used to determine the area of a parallelogram, rhombus, rectangle, square and even a triangle. So I made this demo sketch that basically shows the calculations using the trapezoid formula and the traditional formula for each shape. And it's dynamic so you can drag the points to see the calculations change in real time.
