I am a big fan of dynamic geometry. Whether it be Geometer's Sketchpad, Geogebra or Desmos. So I always appreciate when someone helps students work with any one of those tools. I also have a series of videos that walk you through some constructions. If you don't know a construction is when you build a geometric item that always keeps its properties (like a square). That is when you drag any of the points, it may change size or orientation but not loose the properties of that geometric figure. You can see those here

Math Links for Week Ending Jan 10th, 2025

Though I would say that in more recent years I have steered away from always telling, I love how this really outlines different ways to "tell" and reminding you that there really isn't a dichotomy between telling and not telling. I think that this really sums up the gist of the post but read on for more "Some advocate “Never say anything a kid can say!”, pushing back against traditional transmission models. Others urge teachers to “Just tell them”, emphasising the power of clear explanations. These opposing directives leave teachers caught between conflicting orthodoxies. In reality, teaching requires both explanation and exploration"

Happy New Year! And a new blog post as a treat (a week earlier than planned). NEW Blog Post: ‘Stop asking if we should tell and start asking how’ Why does telling remain such a charged issue in mathematics teaching? Reframing telling through its functions rather than its form offers a way forward.

I like this because it reinforces the idea that mathematicians are not necessarily those who are the "best" at doing math but they are those who persevere when things get hard.

Back on Twitter, my most viewed tweet was a link to my "math pep talk"—a video I made for my students that now has 23K views ๐Ÿ‘€ m.youtube.com/watch?v=kenf... There's a lot to expand on in that video, like structural barriers to success in math. But I'm sharing it again anyway. #MTBoS

I love how this looks like it might be difficult but careful scrutiny can lead you to the correct solution.

Given that next year, 2025, is the first perfect square year in a while, I think you may want to focus on the calculation 452 this coming year in as many ways as you can think of.

I don't like this sort of thing as a memory aid, however, I think it would be great for kids to come up with it on their own or prove that it's true
