Math Links for Week Ending Aug. 20th, 2021

Lots of stuff this week to support the newly released Grade 9 Math curriculum. Firstly a new (to me) resource BHNMath that has all sorts of resources for Ontario secondary school students, parents and teachers. For example, there are a lot of references to story telling in the new grade 9 curriculum and so here is a resource for topic ideas for those expectations. Thanks to @RobinMath3 for pointing this resource out.

Math Links for Week Ending Jul. 16th, 2021

If you follow Ontario math at all this week then you know that a bomb dropped in the area of equity and culturally responsive curriculum. That is, somehow, some of the language about these things that was in the front matter of the new grade 9 curriculum was quietly stripped out. However, people noticed. You can see exactly what the changes were in this Tweet and the associated comments (some of the comments further down the list as well). And even though this directly affects the current Gr 9 curriculum, this really affects all future curriculums. Let your local MPP know that you are not OK with this.

One of the things I'm talking about in my session is that I have been playing around with using a Desmos Activity to create online tests for students that are similar but have different values in the questions for each student. This activity isn't one of those tests. Instead it's a compilation of a bunch of possible types of questions that could be created. And by type, I don't mean the type of math but instead, how many random variables are needed to generate the questions. Check out the description for a couple of videos too. One on what the file is, in general, and the other on how you might use it to create your own questions.

I like being able to show student work easily and this week I found a new way to do that using @getRocketbook and @Wipebook. If you don't know what a Rocketbook is, it's a reusable notebook. That is simplifying it greatly but you can watch this video to get the idea. It turns out you can download some free Rocketbook templates directly from their website and if you want to capture student work that they have put on Wipebook sheets, then all that is required is that you enlarge the QR code and symbols at the bottom of the Rocketbook sheet and the natural black boarder of the Wipebook sheet becomes a large Rocketbook sheet. Great, I think, for saving work from a vertical non permanent surface session. Below is how you could do it. And thanks to @MathisVisual for pointing out that Wipebook already has their own app to do something similar. Check it out here.

There has been a lot of talk in Ontario lately about going back to basics. And although I don't think we have lost the basics (and what the basics actually are is a discussion on its own), I do think there is no harm in practicing basic skills beyond the grades that they are taught. In this case, I took a cue from @gfletchy who has a set of subitizing multiplication cards and built a few different versions of these array multiplication cards. This way we can continue to practice mental multiplication without resorting to memorization techniques. With these cards students can practice multiplication up to 12x12.

I think that sometimes probability gets glossed over when, in fact, I think we need to look deeper at probability as it is one of those mathematical concepts that we want our our students to have a good grasp of. How else are we to teach them of the perils of gambling and lotteries. That all being said, @mathisvisual has tried to demystify theoretical probability in this video. Math Links for Week Ending Feb 16th, 2018

I actually first created this post last year but updated it this week. If you are looking for some interesting data sets to analyze with your classes, look no further than Five Thirty Eights set of data sets used for their articles. The data sets were around before but recently then just made it even easier to get the raw data with their new site https://data.fivethirtyeight.com/ Check out my original (updated) post on how to use the data in your data classes

I updated a couple of GSP sketches to WebSketches this week on sine and cosine law. In both cases you start with a sketch to have students verify that each law works (with random triangles) then each has two pages of randomly generated triangles. One page where you solve for a side length and the other where you solve for an angle.

I sometimes don't think we give probability the treatment that it deserves. However, it is probably one of the few math skills that students need to be masterful with in order to navigate the world in a safe way. So with that I like this lesson that @MarkChubb3 lays out using this 3 player probability using dice rolling. Simple but it connects experimental and theoretical probability nicely.
