Math Links for Week Ending Feb 21st, 2020

Featured Links
For years on the @Desmos homepage, there have been links to sample images created with the Graphing Calculator. So, to me, it seems surprising that it has taken this long for them to have a formal contest. So here it is, the first Desmos Art Contest. Students can win cash prizes in each of the age groups. Due date is April 10th. Get all the details at the link below

Here is a great @Geogebra app created by @Brzezinski_Math to randomize cylinders and ask students to determine possible configurations that make each cylinder possible.

This is an activity we created to help develop the idea that the volume of a right prism is equal to the area of the base times the height. It's relatively simple as it just uses snap cubes and a grid handout. There is also some practice via paper & pencil or @Desmos.

I've also had a couple of other @Desmos activities for multiplying and dividing decimals that focus on some of the properties of those operations. Like for multiplication of values with the same sets of digits (eg 4.5x3.4 and 0.45x3.4) the numerical values are the same but the decimal place changes and similar properties for dividing decimals. These are not activities for determining how to multiply or divide decimals but instead, what are the consequences of doing so.

Do you want to know how geometry relates to arithmetic or probability to calculus? Then why not check out this interactive Map of Mathematics from @QuantaMagazine. The interface is pretty slick. Just choose a topic and see the "tentacles" dynamically reach out to all the related topics. There are some very cool animations here and definitely some great information. Check it out.

Looking for some ideas to use technology meaningfully in math class. Then check out this post from @Catlin_Tucker on using online stations including things like @Desmos, Quiziz and Google Lockboxes. Thanks to @Joe_Sisco for pointing out this one.

This is the last of three bonus episodes highlighting all the featured speakers from OAME 2020. This time its just a few minutes from each as they answer the question: " Is there anything that you believed to be true about teaching or learning when you began your career that you no longer do?". It was one of my favourite episodes to record and I loved the responses. Have a listen
