A long time ago I taught my daughter, who was in grade 3, how to differentiate simple polynomial functions just to show that just knowing an algorithm doesn't mean you understand the math. So this totally resonates with me.

I like this post from @MrJohnRowe about focussing on when students "stall" when problem solving or when they don't even start. "We need to do a better job at helping students with “Problem Starting” and be less obsessed with “Problem Solving”. We undoubtedly need to do a better job at normalising not knowing".We were just talking about this at my school. The idea that sometimes when students can't see a way to start right away, it becomes debilitating.
