I think that looking at "tricks" like this in terms of why they work is always a good thing.

How to divide a number by 5. Double the number. Move the decimal place one unit to the left. You're welcome. 4283/5 8566 856.6 It's *magic* (and i'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that 5=10/2 😜)

Let's learn how to factor quadratics where the leading coefficient isn't 1 without guessing and checking. (Okay I know that sounds boring but I like this video lol)

I think a little geometry could help discover why this works. Here it is in Desmos. When you see it, it makes total sense and all that matters is one piece of wood is twice the width of the other.

I have been a Desmos Fellow (now Amplify Fellow) since 2018 and it has given me resources, insight and inspiration. And don't think you have to be a Desmos expert to apply. They are just looking for people with innovative ideas.

In #MathsToday I had all the students at the whiteboards and asked them to solve ax^2+bx+c=0 by completing the square. They were so surprised to get the quadratic formula as their answer, and then they were proud they had derived this mystical formula without even realizing they were doing it.
