Math Links for Week Ending Oct 5th, 2018

Hey kids Global Math Week is happening starting Wednesday (10/10/18). So many ways you can participate. But at the very least, head on over to www.explodingdots.org and get your kids to sign up to do some exploding dot problems. And if you get this soon enough you can see @JoBoalar's live talk on Joyous Math Facts at 1:25 PM PST on Oct 6th to kick of the Global Math Symposium or just watch the promo video from @JamesTanton to get the gist.

A new 3Act Task from @mathletepearce with a layout that would let you do this in classes from k-9 (depending on the extensions you might use (volume, proportional reasoning etc).

In this latest post from @mathgarden I love that he references one of my favourite courses that I have ever taught. It was a grade 12 course that we had in Ontario called Geometry and Discrete math. I used to call it the "proof" course. It was meant for students going to university and taking things like engineering, physics and math. However, many kids didn't like it because it was hard and it was eventually dropped as a requirement by universities (even though they asked for it to be created). None the less, that is the topic here, that math kids need to experience struggle. The trick is finding the perfect amount for each student.

And more info on struggle, that is, the connection between struggle and high achievement from @JoBoaler and the YouCubed crew: " The people that achieved the most, were always pushing at the edge of their understanding"

After quite a hiatus, the @WSHSmath department has released a new video. And although we no longer include integration in our Ontario Calculus course, this is still pretty good.

Even though it doesn't have to come from @NeilTyson, most of us teachers know this to be true. It's not the stuff that's important but the act of learning that is.

Honestly, being better at understanding statistics would be better for us all. Here @theboysmithy gives us a nice TEDx talk on why. Thanks to @KMarkPet for this one.

If you or your students are rocking an iPhone, then you might want to upgrade to iOS 12 so that you can use the new Augmented Reality Measurement app
