I think this is a good reminder that something seen out of context can be misconstrued. In this case, this question was shown without the original entire worksheet and of course was ridiculed by the Internet but when you see the entire worksheet it makes total sense. Especially when your intent, as a teacher, is to try to get real thinking. In some ways it reminds me of the "How Old is the Shepherd" problem from @RobertKaplinski. Anyway, look at the question (and maybe the original post) but don't forget to follow the link to the original worksheet to see what the intent was

I like this because it's a simple premiss but there are multiple solutions at different grade levels all using slightly different methods from geometric to algebraic. You could certainly find traction at almost any grade with this one.

I am always interested in new ways to assess student thinking (or at least new to me). In this example, @NatBanting incorporates "interviews" with students while assessing them. In Ontario, I think this is a welcomed addition to help teachers assess using two prongs of the triangulation model (Observations, Conversations and Products). Check out the full explanation and examples here:

In a world where technology is all around us (I don't necessarily think that is bad), it is always good to see things that students can do unplugged.

I like it when teachers are willing to try interesting things with assessment. Years ago, I saw a video from Leah Alcala using a method called "My Favourite No". Now she uses some similar techniques to actually do some assessing.

If you've ever read Eugenia Cheng's writings or seen her speak then you know that she is a big advocate for the fact that everyone can do math. In this article she previews her new book "Is Math Real?". I think the issue that we have in society can be summed up here: "The "Bad" trope also provides people with an easy reason to give up, and the education system concurs by writing them off as fundamentally unsuited"
